Set Sail for Spooky Magic: A Family Journey on Halloween on the High Seas

15.08.25 | Kayla | No Comments

It’s the middle of August, the kind of hot where you question why you bothered doing your hair, but to the world… it’s already Halloween. Pumpkins are hanging on Main Street, Spirit Halloween stores are magically appearing in every empty strip mall, Lowe’s and Home Depot have wheeled out the 12-foot skeletons, and Disney Cruise Line ships are gearing up for spooky nights at sea. Who needs sweater weather when you can sip a pumpkin spice latte while wearing flip-flops and sunglasses?

Disney has recently flipped the switch to “spooky,” and honestly, I’m here for it. So it might still be 90 degrees outside, but my brain has already traded sunscreen for jack-o’-lanterns. Because when you mix my love for Halloween with my love for Disney, you get something that’s been on my bucket list for years: Disney Cruise Line’s Halloween on the High Seas. Think of it as trick-or-treating… but with ocean views, Mickey-shaped treats, and zero chance of handing out raisins.

In September 2024, my family and I decided to give it a go, and it did not disappoint. Now, Halloween on the High Seas has quickly become one of my most requested and planned themed cruises for clients, and honestly, I can’t blame them. It’s just that good.

From the moment you step aboard, you know this isn’t an ordinary cruise. The Halloween Tree lighting ceremony happens on embarkation day, a whimsical, slightly mysterious moment that sets the tone for your voyage. The ship transforms into a floating Halloween village… garlands on the banisters, window clings on the portholes, and character-themed pumpkins tucked in little corners that make you stop and smile.

Guests get into the spirit, too. Many decorate their stateroom doors with Halloween magnets, which makes wandering the hallways feel like trick-or-treating for your eyes. Some families even go all out by pre-purchasing a Halloween stateroom decorating kit. Your stateroom host will set it all up before you arrive, so you open your door on the first day to a room bursting with spooky décor, an absolute delight for kids or any Halloween-loving grown-up.

The entertainment lineup is packed with festive fun. Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party was a highlight for my family, a lively “scare-a-bration” with Disney characters dressed in their Halloween best. We saw Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle dressed as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus, which was a major crowd-pleaser. The upper deck came alive with music, dancing, and plenty of trick-or-treating (with allergy-friendly options available).

Throughout the cruise, there are themed character meet-and-greets, family craft activities, and special treats like Halloween desserts and beverages. I even spotted some families in matching Halloween pajamas one evening, which made for adorable photo moments. While we didn’t join in on the pajama fun ourselves, I couldn’t help but smile every time I saw a group strolling the ship in coordinated spooky PJs.

And then there’s the Halloween deck party, a night you won’t forget. Imagine the ocean breeze, a sky full of stars, and Disney characters out on the dance floor with you. Everyone was laughing, singing, and “boo-gieing” to the best Halloween beats. It’s one of those experiences that truly captures what makes Disney magic so special… it’s not just about the entertainment, but the way it pulls everyone together in joy.

Whether you’re into low-key seasonal touches or want to go full Halloween mode, Halloween on the High Seas delivers. You can dress up in costumes for trick-or-treat night, decorate your door, savor pumpkin-spiced drinks on your balcony, or just enjoy the atmosphere. And because this is Disney, every detail feels intentional, immersive, and family-friendly.

Tips for Your Own Halloween on the High Seas

  • Bring costumes — You’ll want them for Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party and trick-or-treating. Speaking of trick or treating, bring a fun bag for that too. Disney Cruise Line does provide one but they’re small.
  • Consider decorating your stateroom door — Halloween magnets make it fun and easy.
  • Pre-purchase the Halloween stateroom decorating kit — It’s a great surprise for kids or Halloween enthusiasts.
  • Pack Halloween pajamas — Not required, but they’re adorable for group photos.
  • Join in the crafts and games — They’re a great way to make unique souvenirs.
  • Plan for character meet-and-greets — Don’t miss Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle as the Sanderson Sisters. Or skeleton Goofy (my personal favorite)
  • Enjoy the themed treats — From pumpkin desserts to spooky drinks, they add a delicious touch to the holiday.

Even better? Pairing Halloween on the High Seas with a trip to Walt Disney World to attend Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. You can stay at a Disney Resort, spend the evening enjoying the party, and then the next morning, hop on a Disney Cruise Line motorcoach that will automagically whisk you from the magic of the parks straight to the magic at sea. There’s something truly special about starting the spooky season in the heart of the parks and then continuing the adventure on board a ship decked out for Halloween, it’s a seamless blend of two unforgettable experiences.

Halloween activities and offerings are subject to change and vary by ship and itinerary, but no matter what, Disney knows how to make it unforgettable.

Planning a Disney Cruise, especially one during a special event like Halloween on the High Seas, can feel overwhelming, even for the most seasoned Disney fans. That’s where I come in. With my Disney Cruise knowledge, gained from sailing about three times a year, every year, and as a parent navigating travel with children on the spectrum, I know how to create seamless, stress-free vacations that cater to every need. From helping you secure the best stateroom, coordinating accessibility options, to making sure your child (or adult) has a magical, inclusive experience, I take care of the details so you can focus on making memories. Whether it’s your first Disney Cruise or your tenth, my goal is to make every moment magical, memorable, and perfectly tailored to your family.
